Agent Manning was in his fifties but looked to be in excellent condition. He appeared excited to see the briefcase. His enthusiasm died when a quick inspection by a lab technician pronounced the briefcase a fake.
“The biometric scanner looks like it came from a toy and the other locks don’t work either. It’s good enough to fool someone if they didn’t handle it. The thing stinks too,” the tech said. He was a young Hispanic guy in a pair of skinny jeans and a lab coat.
“That smell is tear gas,” Devon said. “We think it was released when the case was opened and caused the accident. Check out the gas dispenser too.”
“I can do the preliminary work here, but the downtown lab can do a better job with the equipment they have,” the tech said.
“Send it there if you think it’s necessary.”
“What’s in the real briefcase, Agent Manning,” Maggie asked.
Manning made a sound of frustration. “We’re not sure. There was an auction held several days ago in Germany. This auction was invitation only to some of the baddest actors out there. I’m talking terrorists and the representatives of dictators. All we know is that the object for sale was something revolutionary. Our informant said that an Iranian won. We think it must be a weapon of some sort, but that’s a guess.”
“If it is a weapon and they transported it here then they must also be planning to use it here.”
“The Iranian terrorist found dead at the attack site this morning was the courier. We believe the briefcase was stolen at that time.”
Maggie shook her head. “The shooters were a bunch of neo-Nazis and other losers. None of them had a reputation for being bright. They would have had no way to know about the Iranian or what was auctioned.”
“Their Russian boss might have,” Manning said. He took out his phone and showed Devon and Maggie a photo. The face belonged to E.
“This man was found dead at the farm in Rockland County. He’s been identified as being a former Russian FSB, Federal Security Service agent. It’s possible the Russians staged the terror attack to hide the robbery of the briefcase.”
“They would be risking war doing something like that,” Devon said.
“The Russians we’ve identified were all disgraced former agents or criminals. The Russian government could claim they were working alone. That may be the truth. There’s been a rumor for some time that a group of former FSB agents were hiring themselves out.”
Maggie looked over at the phony briefcase. “Do you have any idea who might have taken the case?”
“It could be whoever shot the seven men in the morgue,” Manning said. “The question is, who are they?”
“If not for them, we might know nothing,” Devon said. “Those seven bodies led us to the other dead men inside the warehouse at the docks.”
“We still would have had the bodies from the shootout in Rockland County,” Manning said.
“True, but would we have tied it to the massacre here? We only know that Russians were involved because of the guy at the tattoo parlor.
